Omnia vs. Storm (Samsung Omnia i900 vs. BlackBerry Storm)

The battle on who’s who when it comes to the best mobile phone or smart phone in town is seemingly unendless. As a matter of fact, because every phone manufacturer would want to outclass what the other brand has produced, almost every month a new phone model is being introduced.
Nowadays, the war is actually on who would prevail as the most appealing and the “smartest” among the smart phones in the market arena. Two of the most popular cellular phone brands in the scene today are Samsung and RIM or Research in Motion Blackberry’s manufacturer. And, there’s no doubt that these two manufacturers have already established themselves in the business.
Let’s dig deeper into who would make it into the hearts of the tech-savvy market by comparing specific models of the aforementioned brands, Samsung’s Omnia i900 and Blackberry’s Storm.
First, let’s take a closer look at the Samsung Omnia i900. The word Omnia means “wish” in Arabic and “everything” in Latin. If the brand’s name would be the single basis of what this mobile phone is all about then it is obvious that this unit is truly “everything that you’ve been wishing for”. The phone touts a 5 megapixel CMOS camera with autofocus, face and smile detection and a 3.2” 240 x 480 pixel resolution LCD display. Aside from the resistive touch screen, it also has an optical “finger-mouse” sensor. As with the memory, it has 128 MB RAM and 256 MB ROM. With regards to storage, buyers can opt for the 8 GB or the 16 GB models. For those who would want extra storage space, the i900 has a microSD card slot. This sleek candy bar in form factor phone is run by Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and has a 624MHZ Marvell PXA 312 processor. When it comes to connectivity, this Samsung phone is wi-fi and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP capable and has a USB 2.0 port. It has a patented user interface called TouchWiz making data and text entry a lot easier. Through its one-of-a-kind widgets, the users can customize navigation controls according to their preference.
Second, to give you a better picture between the ongoing Omnia vs. Storm battle, let’s also explore the specs and product details of the Blackberry Storm. “Press and be impressed”, that’s what RIM promises when you opt for their Storm model. It has a 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with built-in flash. The screen’s resolution is at 360 x 480 pixels thus ensuring vivid color display. For input it uses a multi-touch touch screen that has a haptic feedback, 3-axis accelerometer, volume control buttons, and a proximity and ambient light sensors. It has a 1 GB device memory and a 128 MB application memory. However, if you would want ample storage space, there’s a microSDHC slot that can support up to a maximum of 32 GB storage space. It is run by Blackberry OS 5.0.0.419 and a 528 MHz Qualcomm processor. As with connectivity, the Storm takes pride in having a Bluetooth 2.0 and a Micro-USB port. It can connect thru GPRS and EDGE technology as well as HSDPA 2100 MHz depending on the network’s capability in the area of course. It has a virtual SureType keyboard when used in portrait mode and is able to display a QWERTY keyboard when used in landscape mode.
Looking at the each of the smart phone’s specs and details it is apparent that there each has their own strengths and edge over the other. For those who are particular on the camera and the memory storage, it is obvious that in the Omnia vs. Storm battle, the Samsung phone wins. However, when it comes with the LCD display’s resolution it is RIM’s Blackberry Storm. Omnia’s battery standby time at 430 hours is also more impressive than Storm’s 360. The i900 is also able to accommodate more audio and video formats than its rival. Samsung device’s availability in several stores around the globe as opposed with the Blackberry’s handheld phone may seem to be an edge as well.
Then again, it might be too early to put a verdict on who’s the true winner in the Omnia vs. Storm war. Besides, the Storm is RIM’S first-ever touch screen phone and the company would surely make improvements with its succeeding models.
At the end of the day, it is still up to the consumer to choose which one has truly won their hearts.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD

February 18, 2009 marked the introduction of Samsung’s HD smart mobile phone, the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD. This recent addition to the company’s long line of touchscreen phones certainly offers a lot of new features that will give other mobile phone brands a run for their money. But just as they say almost everyday every mobile phone company is able to come up with newer features that would appeal to the tech-savvy market, lets just see how long would this Samsung HD phone stay in its current position in the market.

The Samsung i8910 Omnia HD hails from the impressive Omnia series. As a successor of the Samsung Omnia i900, this magnificent mobile phone flaunts its AMOLED screen, which guarantees an increased contrast and aspect ratio which is 16:9 QHD resolution display. The 3.7” capacitive touchscreen has a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels and is able to display over 16 million vibrant colors. This makes Standard Definition and High Definition viewing more pleasurable, thus bringing mobile multimedia to new heights. Another benefit of the OLED is that it does not eat up much of the battery’s life. Aside from that, since it has a capacitive panel, the screen is more responsive and sensitive to touch. If there would be some delays or touch control trouble, it would mean a software glitch. Lastly, an AMOLED screen is able work well even under the glaring sunlight.

This mobile phone also takes pride in incorporating an 8 megapixel camera and in having a 720p HD video recording capability (24 fps). This feature makes you shoot and record digicam-quality photos and videos. It also has a built-in flash bulb so you can take decent pictures even when there’s not enough lighting. Other imaging bonus features include smile and face detection, WDR setting and geotagging.

Another remarkable feature of the Samsung i8910 is its high speed internet access capability of HSDPA 7.2Mbps and HSUPA 5.76Mbps. This makes uploading and downloading relatively faster.

This candybar-classified phone also features and accelerometer, a magnetometer and a proximity sensor. It has an FM radio with RDS and an Office document viewer. As with the memory storage, you can opt for either an 8 GB model or a 16 GB unit. But if you’re one who loves to download and save a lot of applications, there’s nothing to worry about since this gadget has a microSDHC card slot expandable memory up to 32 GB maximum. When it comes to connectivity, it has USB 2.0 port, it has WLAN 802. 11b/g with DLNA and is Bluetooth capable.

Samsung deviated from using Windows Mobile and instead used Symbian version 9.4 S60 5th generation as Samsung i8910 Omnia HD’s operating system. Web browsing is made possible thru WebKit and it also has Flash support.

In general, i8910 Omnia was able to keep the functionality and the excellent-quality performance of the earlier Omnia i900. However, like all other mobile phones, there would always be a downside or a limitation. Add to that is the fact that the tech-hungry market would always find some fault and inadequacies in most gadgets. Well, as the old adage says, you definitely can’t please everyone.

Some product experts as well as i8910 Omnia users complain about Samsung’s decision in switching to a Symbian OS from the supposedly more user-friendly Windows Mobile. As a result, the previous Omnia’s TouchWiz widget User Interface was also replaced to fit the new OS. Aside from that, scrolling and switching between menus became complicated. Add to that would be the poorly-designed onscreen keyboard as well as the confusing and complex navigation system which makes basic calling, OS navigation and even contact management difficult to do.

This innovative addition to Samsung’s smart mobile phone line is the world-leader when it comes to having an excellent in performance camera and 720p video recorder. The capacitive AMOLED screen is also something that sets this phone apart from the rest.

If you are not so particular about the OS and the navigation or control keys, the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD would definitely make other mobile phone makers think deeper in the battle. The good thing about that however, is that at the end of it all, the real winners would be the consumers.
